Creating a CON folder in windows

I came across the discussion that folder can’t be name as Con.

This was the article i came across , which led me to do some googling :)

An Indian discovered that nobody can't create a FOLDER anywhere named as "con". This is something pretty cool..and unbelievable . At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!!!

So why cannot we create a folder by a name Con? What’s the reason behind it?

It’s pretty simple, Con is a reserved name from the early days from DOS, it stands for the "CONSOLE" I/O device, Since it is already used by the system. If we create one with some evil tricks then the system will get confused. There will be an ambiguity.

Check out other reserved words to understand what are all the reserved words using which you can't create folders in windows.

Like Con, many other reserve words are there which we can’t create. They are

PRN - It stands for printer.

AUX - It stands for Auxiliary device.

COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9 - They stands for serial ports.

LPT1, LPT2, PRN - They stands for Parallel ports.

NUL - It stands for Bid Bucket.

But to be lucid , CON folder can be created ...

Open the Command prompt by Start->Run and type in cmd

Type MD\\.\\C:\CON

C is the drive path, you can change this drive to your own choice of path.

Now Open My Computer and browse through the path where you created the Con folder. surprising huh!!! yeah buddy, you have successfully created a Con folder.

Now try to delete the folder, it won't get deleted by simple delete option. Better try this:-

To delete the folder, type RD\\.C:\CON

Another method to create Con folder without the use of the Dos.

Create a new folder. Name it Con and press Alt + 255 simultaneously.

Well Alt+255 stands for a blank character in ASCII so it allows you to use this folder name.

Note:- Actually you'll have to press the number's of the number pad or else it won't work. That is, create a new folder, rename it Con but don't press enter yet. Hold down Alt and type 255 on the number pad and then press enter. (for laptop users, press Fn key and press the letter keys k-i-i to make use of number pad).

The next time when someone asks the question that why can’t we create a folder by name Con, say with confidence that it is not true…

now you may ask me a question that , if we are able to create a folder with the name of system file(say con, LPT1, LPT2, PRN) then why can't we have the 2 folder with same name in the same location?. Yes that is also possibe with the same tricks.

Its been long time after i come back to my blog myself. I din mind to look back at my blog myself , so i cant blame u all ;) ..its been long ,since i was planning to update this piece of my digital thinking ( for those who don understand this idiom , i hereby try to mention the idiom 'my digital thinking' as nothing but 'MY BLOG' :P lol) ..

SO after a long time am back with a bang to scrap all my views and ideas and also many new ways of writing my thoughts out to this world.

Facing lot of new ppl , new situations , many new experiences , many ups and downs in life it has been a great long time since my last post. Soon you can expect a lotta stuffs in this blogs so keep following it .

Life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of confusions about being a human . What, it is to be like humans?

We all lead the same life like one another but there is a lot of difference . See the previous statement doesn't it look contradictory.


Yep so to talk about people ...we can see all kinds of people from nuts , freaks , polite , numb lot of people with attitude without a smile ... So what this life all about ???

About name , fame , pride ??????????? dono may be something else ????????

I think its all about life again ..Confusing? yeah life is to live not to act as an impostor but being you , yourself...

Live life to the fullest ...Try making someone laugh , see their smile you can feel life in their smile . You feel sad , go look in for a small baby's smile or the innocence of a kid you can feel the life coming back.....

Why were we so happy as a kid ? Hopefully everyone enjoyed their life as a kid , those who didn't pardon me . We were not behind anything as a child .We were able to laugh happily , run behind a butterfly , shout in the roads, dance in the rain .

Did we loose these things as we grew ...Nope ...We have the same kid inside fearing others...But it doesn't mean you need to watch a butterfly and dance when your TL is bombarding for your erroneous 'for loop' ...Or to laugh in a meeting without thinking about the kid's innocence you saw previously .....

It means live life ...Try to laugh out your life ..Don keep restrictions on your part , but be yourself . Don confuse this with the Laughing therapy of Vasool Raja MBBS ;)....Take this as don restrict yourself , if you made a mistake try to rectify by smiling out the ignorance out of which you made the mistake , correct it , live your life.

Make people around you smile , live your life , keep smiling ..........Hope this new year everyone keep smiling ..Keep living:)
